Butterfly
- Cradled in a chyrisallis,
a caterpillar sleeps
- content with its surroundings
- until the moment comes when
it moves
- and it makes that tiny little
hole
- in its soft-shelled home
- and it slips out the corner
of a wing
- and pushes
- gently and gently and gently
- until with a soft fury she
emerges
- and is immediately in flight,
- colorful and incredible,
- a miracle of life,
- a unique spirit in motion
- and no matter how long she
flutters around us,
- when she is gone
- it feels like not long enough.
- You never want to see the
butterfly going
- you only want to see her
coming your way,
- coming into your world,
- brightening your life
- with a few seconds of fluttering
- in the space around you
- before she is gone on another
journey.
- And even though you know
- that her visit may be short,
- you wouldn't trade it
- for the world.
- With much love,
- for my cousin Amanda--Stephanie
Elliott
