Butterfly
Cradled in a chyrisallis, a caterpillar sleeps
content with its surroundings
until the moment comes when it moves
and it makes that tiny little hole
in its soft-shelled home
and it slips out the corner of a wing
and pushes
gently and gently and gently
until with a soft fury she emerges
and is immediately in flight,
colorful and incredible,
a miracle of life,
a unique spirit in motion
and no matter how long she flutters around us,
when she is gone
it feels like not long enough.
You never want to see the butterfly going
you only want to see her coming your way,
coming into your world,
brightening your life
with a few seconds of fluttering
in the space around you
before she is gone on another journey.
And even though you know
that her visit may be short,
you wouldn't trade it
for the world.
With much love,
for my cousin Amanda--Stephanie Elliott
